The Appearing of the Lord for the Spreading of the Gospel and the Building Up of the Church

I.     The Lord's Appearing (Acts 9:1-9)

A.  Saul

1.   An abuser and persecutor of the church
(Acts 9:1-2;  22:4-5;  Acts 26:9-11)

2.   He sought God (Acts 22:3)

B.  The Lord appears to Paul

1.   A bright light from heaven
(Acts 9:3;  22:6;  26:13;  Matt. 4:15-16)

2.   He falls to the ground (Acts 9:4;  Phil. 3:5-11)

3.   Jesus reveals Himself personally to Saul
(Acts 9:4-5;  22:8, 14;  26:14;  Gal. 1:15-16)

4.   Saul becomes blind and remains in prayer for 3 days
(Acts 9:8-9, 11;  Eph. 1:16-18)

C.  Today the Lord wants to appear to us

1.   Do not become blinded by this age
(2 Cor. 4:3-6)

2.   Loving His appearing (2 Tim. 4:8)

II.      The Appearing of the Lord and Touching the Lord through the Members of His Body
(Acts 9:1-30;  1 Cor. 12:12-14;  Eph. 1:22-23;  2:16-22)

A.  Being led by Ananias, the Lord's disciple
(Acts 9:10-17)

1.   Ananias, a disciple at Damascus (V. 10)

2.   Here I am, Lord!

3.   Tell the Lord our concerns (V. 13)

B.  A chosen vessel (V. 15)

1.   To bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel

2.   To suffer much for My name's sake

C.  Becoming one (being identified) with the body of Christ (V. 17)

1.   Have sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit

2.   He arose and was baptized
(V. 19;  Rom. 6:3-8;  Gal. 3:27)

3.   Many members - one body; so also is Christ
(1 Cor. 12:12-14)

D.  The church, His body, the fullness (Eph. 1:22-23)

1.   Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation  (Rev. 5:9-10)

2.   One in Christ - who is the head (Eph. 4:15-16)

3.   Joined and knit together in Christ's love

4.   Edifying itself in love (V. 16)

III.  The Appearing of the Lord Frees Us of Our Concepts (Acts 10)

A.  Spiritual activities are accompanied by prayer

1.   Paul prayed (Acts 9:11)

2.   Cornelius had been praying even longer (Acts 10:4)

3.   Peter prayed (Acts 10:9)

B.  Characteristics of the Lord's appearing

1.   The Lord's appearing varies in shape and form

2.   The Lord's speaking always becomes clearer
(Acts 10:13, 15, 19-20, 34)

C.  The Lord shows Peter, that he must drop his concepts (Acts 10:10-20, 28)

1.   There is no more difference between Jews and Greeks

2.   The Lord has cleansed all men

3.   The Lord has poured out the Spirit upon all flesh

D.  The Lord has already prepared people, who want to hear the gospel

IV.  The Lord is the Spirit in our spirit

A.  The Lord appears to us to change us and to go on with us

1.   Change through repentance, baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38)

2.       The Spirit opens our eyes (John 16:8)

3.       Paul's and Peter's experience (Acts 9 und 10)

4.       Our experience in the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23)

5.       The Spirit is the Lord

6.       Learn obedience

7.       Be subjected to the Word and the leading of the Spirit

B.  Spiritual means, to experience Christ in the spirit

1.   To know about my spirit and to want to experience it (2Tim. 2:22)

2.      Cleansing our heart and applying the cross
(Matt. 5:8;  Gal. 2:19)

3.      Talking to God (Ps. 119:26)

4.      Eating the living Word with prayer
(John 6:48-50, 63;  Eph. 6:17-18)

5.      The name of Jesus has power, when we use His name

C.  To live Christ for the building up of the church (Phil. 1:19-21)

V.    Working Together with the Lord through the Prayer of the Church
(Matt. 18:19-20;  Acts 12:5;  Col. 1:9-12)

A.  God's people go on through prayer
(Exodus 17:12;  Neh. 1:4;  2:4;  Dan. 6:10-11)

B.  Effective and operative prayer

1.   Prayer and fasting (Luke 2:37-38;  Mark 9:29)

2.   Pray consistently like Daniel (Dan. 6:10-11)

C.  The church's authority is to loosen and to bind (Matt. 18:19-20)

1.   Where two or three are gathered together in My name

2.   The whole church gathered to pray (Acts 12:5)

D.  Prayer for further salvation
(Phil. 1:19)

E.  Prayer for the full knowledge of God's will
(Eph. 1:16-23;  3:1-10)

F.   For the saints to walk worthy of their calling
(Col. 1:9-12;  2 Thess. 1:1-12)

1.   To please God in all things - Christ's example
(John 4:34;  5:30;  6:38;  8:29b;  15:5)

2.   Being fruitful in every good work

3.   Increasing in the full knowledge of God

4.   Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power of His glory

5.   For all patience and longsuffering with joy

VI.  A People Full of Willingness, Who Serves the Lord (Acts 13:1-3)

A.  Made to ministers through the Lord's appearing (Acts 26:16;  Luke 1:74;  Gal. 5:24)

B.  The Lord needs a willing, young troop to serve Him (Ps. 110:3)

1.   Meeting the Lord's need

2.   Having a living relationship to the Lord and knowing what He wants through revelation

3.   Being neither idle (lazy) nor unfruitful, but rather fervent in spirit (Matt. 20:1-7;  2 Pet. 1:8;
Rom. 12:11)

C.  The Lord's reaction - He appears though the speaking of the Holy Spirit

VII. The Lord Appears to His Prophets (Acts 13:1-3)

A.  The Lord appears to His prophets

1.   While praying together (Acts 13:2)

2.   In order to go on (Amos 3:7-8)

B.  The prophets speak on the Lord's people

1.   Encourage, establish and strengthen
(Acts 11:22-24;  13:43;  14:22;  15:32)

2.   Edifying the body (Eph. 4:11-12)

3.   Speaking in the Spirit (1 Cor. 14:3-4, 8-9, 15, 19,
24-26, 29-32;  Acts 21:8-9)

4.   Speaking out of faith (2 Cor. 4:13)

C.  The Lord needs and prepares prophets for Himself

1.   He purges our lips of sin and makes us sufficient (Is. 6:5-8;  2 Cor. 3:5-6)

2.   We are not too young (Jer. 1:4-8)

3.   He puts His words into our mouth
(Jer. 1:9;  Matt. 10:19-20)

VIII. Experiencing the Leading of the Holy Spirit

A.  We need the leading of the Spirit

1.   Paul and Barnabas didn't get up to leave by themselves, but rather they were sent out by the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:4)

2.   How can we do God's work, if God does not show us what He wants to do?

3.   Experience the Spirit's speaking though serving and fasting – laying aside your own interests (Acts 13:2)

B.  Spreading the gospel through the Spirit with boldness, power and joy
(Acts 13:9-11, 46, 52;  14:2-3)

C.  Being obedient to the leading of the Spirit
(Acts 16:6-10)

1.   The Spirit reacts, when we want to do something that is not God's will

2.   When we are obedient to the leading of the Spirit, we can experience that God's ways are higher that our ways (Is. 55:8-9)

IX.  The Gospel in Athens – From the Mind to the Spirit

A.  Be a Jew to the Jews
(Acts 17:2-3, 10-11, 17)

B.  Be a Greek to the Greek
(Acts 17:14-34)

1.   From dead idols to the living God (Acts 17:24-27)

2.   Always telling or hearing some new thing - in our mind (Acts 17:21)

3.   God, who made the world and everything in it, does not dwell in temples made with hands
(Acts 17:24; 19:26)

4.   He has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord (Acts 17:26)

5.   Seek God, grope/touch and find Him - in the Spirit (Acts 17:27)

6.   God now commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30)

C.  The spirit of the man knows the things of a man, and the Spirit of God knows the things of God (1 Cor. 2:9-16)

X.    His Appearing Makes Us Witnesses
(Acts 22 and 26)

A.  We are witnesses of His resurrection

1.   Bearing a personal witness

2.   A witness tells what he has seen and heard
(Acts 26:16)

3.   God is our help (Acts 26:22)

B.  Having a desire for the Lord to appear to us in further matters

1.   Speaking the gospel at various opportunities and to various people (Acts 8:27;  10:24f;  11:19-20;  8:27)

2.   Delivered from the people, as well as from the Gentiles (Acts 22:15;  26:17;  John 17:16)

C.  A conduct worthy of the gospel 

1.   A good conduct and our word is a strong testimony (1 Pet. 2:18-25;  3:1-2)

2.   Walk with a good conscience
(Acts 23:1-5;  Acts 24:16)

XI.  The Church in Ephesus (Acts 20:17-38)

A.  Paul served in Ephesus (Acts 18:18-21;  19:1-41)

B.  Paul's burden for the elders in Ephesus
(Acts 20:17-34)

1.   Paul's example for the brothers in Ephesus
(Acts 20:18-27)

a)   He served the Lord as a slave with all humility, with many tears and trials

b)   He kept back nothing that was helpful

c)   He taught publicly and from house to house: repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ

d)   He did not count his life of any value or dear to himself

e)   He just wanted to finish his race and complete the ministry which he received from the Lord Jesus

f)    He did not shun to declare the whole counsel of God

2.   Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock
(Acts 20:28-31)

a)   The Holy Spirit has made you overseers

b)   You should shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood

c)   Savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock

d)   Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw the disciples after themselves (1 Tim. 1:3-11, 19-20;  4:1-2;  6:3-5)

e)   That is why we should be watchful and keep Paul as an example before our eyes

3.   Know the living God and the word of His grace
(Acts 20:32) - it is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified

C.  The epistle to Ephesus (Rev. 2:1-7)

XII. The Whole Counsel of God

A.  Man in God's image should reign over the enemy and be prepared as the bride
(Genesis 1:26; Rev. 12:10-12a; 19:7-9; 21:1-3)

1.   Fall and restoration (Genesis 2:16-17;  Eph 2:1-6)

2.   Predestined to sonship (Eph. 1:3-6)

3.   Redeemed for the dispensation of the fullness of the times (Eph. 1:7-12)

a)   All things are gathered together in Christ,
He is the beginning, the way and the goal
(Eph. 1:10;  Col. 1:15-19)

b)   We become His inheritance

4.   Saved, sealed with the Holy Spirit for our inheritance and our full redemption

5.   Our personal calling is included in His great counsel (Eph. 1:18)

6.   He is given to be head over all things to the church, so that the church is in His image (His body) and exercises His reign on earth (Eph. 1:19-23)

7.   By the church God wants to make his manifold wisdom known to the principalities and powers
(Eph. 3:8-11)

8.   The Lord prepares the church to be His bride and calls the overcomers for His reign
(2 Cor. 11:2-3; Eph. 5:25-27; Rev. 3:12-13)

B.     The means given to us to reach the goal

1.   What type of people God uses to reach His goal

2.   All spiritual means are given to us to gain Christ, to live Him and to build up the church
 (2 Pet.1:3-5;  1 Cor. 2:13)

XIII. Shepherding (Acts 20:28-31;  John 21:15-17)

A.  The decisive attitude for the building up of the church

B.  Take heed to yourself (Acts 20:28)

1.   Be shepherded yourself by the Lord

2.   Take heed to the good doctrine (1 Tim. 4:16; 1:10)

3.   Keep yourself pure (1 Tim. 5:22)

C.  Shepherd all the flock, the church of God
(Acts 20:28)

1.   Our Self must be put to an end (John 21:15-17)

2.   God wants to shepherd (Ez. 34:11-16)

3.   Love the Lord to shepherd the sheep

4.   The Lord shepherding the sheep by the disciples

D.  The content and the meaning of shepherding

1.   Do not serve with dead doctrines or letters

2.   Do not be lords over those entrusted to you

3.   Nourish and give food (Ps. 145:15)

4.   Working edification (1 Pet. 2:2-5)

5.   Protect the sheep from savage wolves (Acts 20:29-31)

XIV. Commended to God and to the word of His grace (Acts 20:32)

A.  God is our dwelling place (Ps. 90:1)

B.  The word of His grace

1.   It is inseparable from God (John 1:1-3)

2.   Through the word of grace we receive grace upon grace (John 1:14, 16)

3.   It gives us the inheritance (Gal. 3:28-29;  4:1)

C.  Pursuing holiness (Heb. 12:14;  Ps. 110:3)
